The following describes initiatives and strategies that can be adopted by Government that will build capacity in Australia to effectively engage men and boys in violence prevention. Note that these initiatives are focused on primary prevention rather than initiatives aimed at men and boys at risk of using violence (secondary prevention / intervention) or already using violence (tertiary prevention / intervention).

This new book addresses the historical debate within feminism and critical studies of men and masculinities on whether men should be encouraged to develop alternative masculinities, or whether they should be challenged to renounce masculinity altogether. Bob Pease argues that men have to move beyond the illusion of masculinity to address their habitual ways of relating that reinforce dominance and oppression, and that they have to discard their adherence to binary gender identities and foster subjectivities that are multiple and fluid.

Several years ago I was in the National Rugby League (NRL) Hall of Fame in Australia where I was giving a talk to players, owners, managers, and staff. I posed the question: why should men in the NRL work to end violence against women? After all, I knew this was a key issue in male allyship, along with many other important workplace and social issues of women’s rights.
