The Movement of Men Against AIDS In Kenya (MMAAK) is launching a new publication at the forthcoming ICASA in Abuja. "Men can make a difference" is part of MMAAK's important work in challenging men's role in both the spread and prevention of HIV.
MMAAK's skills building workshop at ICASA at 10.30 on 6th December will explain the way this has been achieved by the group in Kenya: "Initiating, Managing and running of support groups of men infected and affected with HIV/AIDS" - Session Id:TuSkB2005016.
Since 2001, the Movement of Men Against AIDS in Kenya (MMAAK) has concentrated on supporting and equipping men living with and affected by HIV and AIDS to play a more prominent role in Africa's response to HIV and AIDS. MMAAK's reason for developing this training manual is to record and share its experience that "men can make a difference" in HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support. MMAAK's programming and this manual are inspired by the lives, case studies, courage and vision of men who, when given support, have made a tangible difference to their lives, their families and their communities.
MMAAK has devised this training manual to help others to start men's HIV and AIDS support groups of their own. It can be used by community based organisations, training facilitators, workplace initiatives, faith based organisations and others to achieve a better understanding of the impact that men can make in fighting the AIDS epidemic.
The development of this training manual has been participatory: it was done through a number of interactive processes, collecting views and narrative testimonies from men and women from all walks of life in Kenya. Thanks to support from GSK's Positive Action Programme, the Manual has been designed and printed for ease of use by community-based groups of all sizes. Each module gives clear instructions for facilitators on the content and style of training sessions, handouts and other materials.
